We host production crews in our Mom and Pops run Studio. Our client lounge and kitchen are set up to look like a comfy coffee house complete with dishes, appliances, fabric towels (which we also have a laundry room to service) and separate recycle containers to accomodate the division of landfill items and recyclables. We pay an independent garbage collector so we need to separate.

Large productions do bring in vast amounts of disposable products, and (err) plastic water bottles, but all and all, most of our regulars make themselves at home and fill the dishwasher after the craft services have been stored away.

It starts with education, most will be receptive to a sign that says how to separate garbage, which everyone should be doing already in their homes. If we continue to lead by example by providing or suggesting the alternatives and reinforcing simple and accessable starting points, then the rest of the production industry eventually catches on.

Besides the operation of our studio http://www.keepitinthefamilyproductions.com I am a member of Green 13 and am committed to the promotion of the greening of Toronto. http://www.green13toronto.blogspot.com

As a post production house we generate a startling number of non reusable cd/dvd discs for various tv shows and films.
I cringe to throw them in the garbage - surely there must be somewhere I can send these to be recycled locally - the closest place I have found to do this is in Winnipeg.
too far for my boss to agree to ship them there.
any ideas folks?

Green Screen Toronto on "Entertainment industry slow to adopt green practices, survey says"

By Wendy Wilson February 24, 2009

Feb. 24 | Despite reporting an increased awareness of the importance of implementing green practices, more than 75% of respondents in a new survey of entertainment industry professionals gave the industry a failing grade for its efforts to make concrete progress toward creating more sustainable businesses.
The survey of 100 IT executives working for such companies as studios, post-production houses and distributors of digital content, was conducted by the Business Performance Management Forum in conjunction with Rackable Systems and Intel. Part of their joint "Think Eco-Logical" initiative, the survey provided the entertainment industry with an opportunity to rate its own performance in greening its business, while offering insight as to where the industry can benefit from improved education about new resources and best practices going forward.

"Basically, what we found is that there is a high sensitivity to the need to reduce a company's carbon footprint and to have more green IT practices," said Derek Kober, director of the BPM Forum. "The industry understands the benefits involved, but by in large has not made much progress in that area."

Jason Coari, senior marketing manager for Rackable, a provider of server and data center storage products, said the research indicated a lack of understanding on the part of companies that believe they need to improve their energy efficiency but cannot tie the "real business benefits" of doing so back into their operations.

"The demand on computing power and equipment is not abating, and it's not going to abate anytime soon," Coari said. "As a vendor, we need to provide these companies with better tools to show them how their current equipment compares to what's available today."

Coari cited the improved energy efficiency of current servers over those purchased four or five years ago, along with solid state hard drives and advances in technology that allow data centers to operate at 80 degrees rather than 65 degrees, as just a few real-world ways content providers could boost their eco-friendliness.

"There's no silver bullet that's going to solve the problem, but the more we try to share best practices, the more we're able to help everyone move in the right direction," Coari said.

Respondents from the entertainment industry also ranked celebrity involvement second only to recent press about environmental concerns as the top two reasons for their companies' greater collective interest in green issues.

"There were not as many celebrities' names in the e-commerce study," BPM Forum's Kober said of the difference between this survey and a similar one of e-tail executives last month.

This is a note to all who attended the LED workshop on February 21st at Ryerson. I learned so much about the craft of lighting and marveled at the incredible level of mutual respect the lighting technicians, designers and engineers showed each other. I must add that I was extremely impressed with the organization and delivery of this workshop. It was well structured, but flexible enough to accommodate everyone. Lunch was excellent and the panel was solidly conducted and very inclusive. I felt people were included and even the less relevant questions were addressed courteously. I really hope that this is the beginning of a dialogue that will flourish in the coming months and years, not only as the discussion may pertain to greening the industry, but towards creating an even more professional atmosphere in our industry. I am humbled by the outstanding contributions of all the volunteers and stakeholders.

By Wendy Wilson October 1, 2008

The Kill A Watt electricity meter monitors the energy used by appliances.

OCT. 1 | Retailers can assess the energy efficiency of electronics from TVs and DVD players to computers with a family of products now available online.

Once connected to a specific electronic device, Kill A Watt products register how much power appliances are using and report that information back through an LCD display. The data is provided to users in kilowatt hours, the same unit of measure used by power companies.

Among the line of Kill A Watt devices for sale are:

• The Kill A Watt electricity meter ($29.95), a power monitor for use with any 115-volt appliance. The electricity meter provides information about an item’s power consumption by the day, week, month or year.

• The Kill A Watt EZ ($49.95), which saves information about individual electronics’ power usage, allowing consumers to still access those readings after a device is unplugged. With the Kill A Watt EZ, users also can enter local kilowatt hour rates to translate the numbers into a dollar amount.

• The Kill A Watt PS ($99.95), a power strip that includes the meter function. This product still provides protection from surges while registering their efficiency, a device for use with home theater and computer systems. The Kill A Watt PS features six standard outlets and two extra-wide outlets.

Kill a Watt products can be purchased online at CableOrganizer.com.

By Samantha Clark September 3, 2008

SEPT. 3 | MPI will release its first DVD with eco-friendly packaging on Oct. 28. A restored version of the 1992 documentary Baraka will be delivered on standard-definition DVD and Blu-ray in GPack 100% recyclable cases.

The Forest Stewardship Council-certified GPack cases, by James Allyn, are made with 20% post-consumer waste, and the labels are printed with soy-based inks. The cases weigh less than conventional plastic DVD and Blu-ray packaging, lowering transportation costs and related greenhouse gases.

“We’ve been looking into eco-friendly packaging for a while now, and Baraka was the perfect title to test it out on,” MPI spokeswoman Stephanie Marlow said. “Moving forward, we definitely plan on trying out more ‘green’ routes with packaging, manufacturing, etc.”

Directed by Koyaanisqatsi choreographer Ron Fricke, Baraka features images of the world and its people set to music. The title will be priced at $29.98 on DVD and $34.98 on Blu-ray. Prebook is Sept. 22.

Welcome to the new forum of the Green Screen Toronto website. While perhaps our traffic is still a bit on the slow side, having just recently launched, we hope that this part of the site will become an area for members of the film and television production community in the GTA to come and share information on greening production. Whether it's to aid in the reuse of materials and the recycling of sets, or discussion on equipment and/or best practices, we look forward to hosting you and hope to see this section of our site become a valuable resource for the local industry.
